Billions in Change

3/10/2020

The world is facing some huge problems. There’s a lot of talk about how to solve them. But talk doesn’t reduce pollution, or grow food, or heal the sick. That takes doing. This film is the story about a group of doers, the elegantly simple inventions they have made to change the lives of billions of people, and the unconventional billionaire spearheading the project.

Watch the film and answer the questions that follow either here on the blog or on paper. this will take 2 class periods.

Link to film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY7f1t9y9a0
  1. “Life is too short to spend it doing things that don’t have a real impact,” says Dr. Jack Juni, a Stage 2 engineer. Do you agree with this philosophy? Does the way you spend your hours reflect your opinion? Explain your answer.
  2. What do you think it means to be “fast at failure,” as mentioned by Stage 2 engineer Kit Smoker?
  3. As an adult, would you want to work for an employer like Bhargava? Why or why not?
  4. If you were wealthy, would you buy a Renew machine? Explain your answer.
  5. What do you think has motivated Bhargava to produce this film? What would someone who disagrees with your opinion argue is more likely Bhargava’s true motivation?
  6. If Bhargava and his team are successful in solving the global problems of energy, water, and health, what would be a fourth area you would want the Billions in Change movement to work on solving?
  7. Bhargava says, “The more wealth you get, the bigger your duty becomes, which is to help those who have less, who are suffering.” Do you agree with this idea? Why or why not? Do you think most of the wealthy people in our country agree with this idea? Why or why not?

Sort the following words from Amy Tan’s Two Kinds into 4 groups. You will then label each group with a specific title. You must create 4 groups – a group can contain as few as two words from the list. Be prepared to share your List Group Label with the class and defend your decisions.

Part 2
Write a short narrative using all of the words from one of your lists. Give it a title.

Among many other things, cell phone studies have shown:
  • One in three teens sends more than 100 text messages a day, or 3000 texts a month.
  • More than half of teens (56%) associate the absence of their phone with at least one of three emotions: loneliness, being upset or feeling anxious. Girls are more likely than boys to feel anxious or lonely without their phone.
  • Roughly four-in-ten teen cellphone users (43%) say they often or sometimes use their phone to avoid interacting with people. This is truer for teen girls than teen boys. Roughly half of teen girls who have access to a cellphone (54%) say they often or sometimes use their mobile device to avoid social interaction, while 31% of teen boys report doing the same.

What do you think? Are any of these findings true for you? Reflect.

Do Now

Yesterday, we discussed the Bystander Effect. Bystander Intervention refers to a person deciding to voice their opinion about someone else’s language and/or behavior, or taking some action, thereby working to prevent violence or abuse. In New York City, we hear this in the slogan, "if you see something, say something."

Do you think people can be taught or trained to intervene? Explain your thinking.
